Keening was an Irish vocal ritual artform performed at a wake or graveside in the mourning of the dead.
Keens are said to have contained raw unearthly emotion, spontaneous word repeated motifs, crying and elements of song in particular in the style of Sean Nos singing. Keens were once part of Irish funerals performed by women who were often hired to come & not only assist the family with their grief but also to support the passing over of the deceased soul to the afterlife. These women were known as Bean Chaointe ,Keeners or Keening Women .This would often happen over a few days where they would move in & out of states of liminality. The word keening originates from the gaelic word Caoineadh meaning “ crying”.Keening women can be traced back as far as Mother Mary , Mary Magdalene & the Goddess Bridget .Bridget ,member of the Tuatha De Danann ,the daughter of the Dagda in Irish mythology , is said to have entered into a keen after the death of her son .The story goes that she her grief led to the first time crying or wailing was heard in Ireland. In the mid-nineteen century the Catholic Church began to look at Keening as uncivilised & began to banish keening .
The Keen
In a grief gathering or keening retreat we open to channel and give voice to our own grief and that of our ancestors. In particular the women in our lineage whose cries were left unheard and whose voices were silenced. We cry what could never be spoken.
We breathe, we move, we chant, we sing, we cry, we roar, we shriek.
We go there….This is The Caoin Method .
A modern day keen for personal grief .
It is a most sacred, beautiful & poignant yet liberating ceremony connecting in with ourselves and each other as women
It is an invitation to go beyond the mind and the stories through movement, breath and dance to the spaces in the body where our grief and trauma is stored. It is an opportunity to meet our grief, our hurt, our shame, our rage so as to allow it safe passage out of the body through the medium of breath ,sound and tears so we may feel the ecstasy on the other side. It is a remembrance of what our great great grandmothers did before us and opportunity to awaken the Sacred Art of Keening which is re-emerging in our society today reformed in the modern day to assist in the integration of the collective unconscious grief also. It is an invitation to awaken the Keening Woman or Keener within .It is a space to surrender in the arms and presence of other women but also a space to witness and to hold.
It is a process and a ceremony every woman needs at least once in her life….it is essential to her being.
The Caoin Method is a process of welcoming the grief within our body, our own heart & womb through embodiment & somatic practices using breathwork and other methods to awaken & invoke crying (The Caoin/Cry) .This is a Grief ceremony for Women ,a Grief Ritual .It is Primal.
We can carry grief for so much from the death of a loved one to the loss of a relationship or job. Maybe we grieve old parts of ourselves or old parts of our lives.
The Caoin is derived from and adapted from my own very first Keen with my beautiful teacher Katie Blackwell. A very very special keen where my partners son passed over during my own keen.I hold this practice very close to my heart & am honoured & humbled to be one of the many women bringing it back into society today. Over the years of facilitating keening circles, retreats & trainings Ive weaved my own version so to speak and changed the name as to not dishonour the original lineage of Keening in any way as it was originally a song ,a chant over a deceased body where as in my work is focused on the crying (Caoineadh from where the word keening has been derived).Beneath the crying anything can come from rage to ecstasy and from here the deepest of grief & trauma can be met with love and compassion within a community of embodied women who also carry the frequency of your pain within them. It is not a practice of the mind so its necessary to enter liminal spaces .And a song may very well come through too. When we meet here, just ordinary women, as we have once met ourselves ,we open up a portal of sorts for you to go there too and Rebirth yourself in the process. This is a space where you will be held bravely & fiercely with so much compassion and love & also a space where you maybe called to hold another in their grief too.
(Retreats throughout the year -not recommended if you are currently experiencing new grief or are recently bereaved. This work is not recommended for your nervous system & sacred process as it is too soon .This work is only recommended for those who have already experienced somatic work & were able to integrate it afterwards .A lot can come up ,because by attending you are saying yes & inviting what’s ready to come up but you must also discern if you are ready to meet it & can hold yourself in what ever arises during & after the retreat. For more info on the original keen I highly recommend researching Mary McLaughlin's wonderful work )
Next Retreat is February 7th in Westcove Estate , Castlecove in Kerry
The Veiled One -Lilith’s Lament Feb 7,8,9 2025
My rebirthing journey with Geraldine has been uniquely beautiful. Journeying through different stages of my life and releasing pain and suffering that I didn’t even know I was holding from these times with Geraldine freed up so much space for me. The space that she holds is so unique. My keening experience with Geraldine was one of the most profound experiences I have ever had. I hold this experience so close to my heart. The fearless space which Geraldine created allowed me to connect with and express my grief in a way I never thought possible. Keening gave me access to deep authentic expression of my pain and once I expressed it my whole life changed. I felt so free and light after that experience and life opened up for me again. I highly recommend the work that Geraldine offers. Her knowledge and wisdom is incredible and I found the journey so freeing and life changing. Thank you thank you thank you ❤️

When the remembrance of this ancient practice kept popping into my awareness and conversations, I knew it would not be long until I was guided to a guide and guardian keeper of this ancient, primordial even, practice. Pain, grief and darkness are familiar companions of mine and although my capacity to hold myself and others in it, runs deep, it is not often I can feel so safe and nurtured to be held. Yet this is the space Ger and her team offers, a beautiful, powerful holding space, honest, transparent, rich in integrity and compassion. In such a potent space, the invitation arises to go to the depths of our heart and body, to not only honour and hold pain and grief we inevitably carry but to also remember and retrieve the treasures and innate gifts that are held in the very same place. I will be forever changed from the weekend amongst such incredible people in such a special place. Míle Buíochas. Melanie Taylor

I'm not sure I full have the words to encapsulate the potency of the work that Ger dose however I can share how I feeling to translate that. This was my first Keening training weekend and the depth of the work has blown me away, there has been such monumental shifts in my life on subtle levels and I feel the most grounded I have felt after any work. The work takes you to the depths of rebirthing and into the shadows that are to be cleared and released so that you can make space within the self, like decluttering the soul. I released lifetimes of shame and it has allowed me to live in a more easeful way with less judgement and triggers in so many areas of my life. Keening is such an ancient practise and truly reveals the power of a woman in her essence what she can hold and what she can let go out Ger holds a sovern and grounded space, empowering women to reclaim who they are! She guides women in a humbling, compassionate and firm way so they feel full the trust to go to the deep raw spaces that are needed to clear so they can rise. She is a wise, embodied and passionate teacher. I am greatful, honoured and humbled by this path. I cannot recommend this work highly enough it's life changing, powerful and real This work is needed for the women of the world .Claire Killilea
